Great news: there is a new model for educating autistic kids and kids with ADD or ADHD in town.
Twice Exceptional schools – or 2E – are based on the idea further explored in the book Bright Not Broken: Gifted Kids, ADHD and Autism by Diane M. Kennedy, Rebecca S. Banks and Temple Grandin that says 2E kids are incredibly gifted but they are also learning challenged. This becomes especially apparent in the traditional school system, which essentially caters to only one type of learning style.
Our 2E kids suffer in the traditional education model because they are completely overlooked and misunderstood.
In contrast, 2E schools focus on extremely individualized education strategies that are based on each child’s strengths and motivations. For instance, I visited the Quad Prep School, a 2E school in New York City, that had a female student who loved to sew. To encourage and support her, they created an entire curriculum for her around sewing – she even learned math and science around sewing, and went on to compete in a sewing competition!
The children at these schools are thriving. If you’d like to learn more, check out this list of 2E schools across the country.

Tip of the Week: Investigate!
If you think a 2E school would be right for your child, don’t be shy about investigating! Take a look at the link above and find a school near you. There’s no harm in taking a tour and learning more about what the institution could do for you and your child.
